The Crown season 6 release updates, cast, synopsis, filming, and more

The Crown season 6 is going to be the last of the series. What do we know about the series so far? When will it be released on Netflix? Here’s what we know of the season so far.

There was some back and forth on The Crown season 6. While the series was originally planned as six-season series, there was a moment where Peter MOrgan decide it should end with the fifth season. Then he realized he didn’t have enough time for all the storylines, so he switched back to six seasons.

Now all eyes are on when this final season will air. Of course, at the time of initially writing this, the fifth season hasn’t arrived. There’s still some time to come for this season, but here’s what we know about it so far.

The Crown season 6 release date predictions

There isn’t a date just yet, but we’re looking at The Crown season 6 to arrive in November 2023. This would match the release of previous seasons. The first two seasons were released within a year of each other, then there was a break until the next two seasons came out within a year of each other.

Each two seasons sees a change of cast with a delay in the return to filming. We have that with the fifth season, and we’re looking at that arriving in November 2022. That would suggest just a year for the final season.

The Crown season 6 cast

The cast change is happening with the fifth season, and that cast will stick around for the sixth season. The main cast is confirmed as:

  • Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II
  • Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
  • Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret
  • Dominic West as Prince Charles
  • Meg Bellamy as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
  • Rufus Kampa as Young Prince William
  • Ed McVey as Older Prince William

With the fifth season focusing on the untimely death of Diana, Princess of Wales, we won’t see Elizabeth Debicki return. We may see Claire Foy and Olivia Colman return as Queen Elizabeth II if there are flashbacks.

We’re still waiting to see who will play Prince Harry, and it’s not yet clear if the show will get as far as Meghan Markle coming into the family.

The Crown season 6 filming

Filming of the season began in September 2022. However, with the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, Sept. 8, production has been put on hold. The length of the hold isn’t known, but Variety shared that hinting is set to be paused on the day of the Queen’s funeral. This would suggest that there will be time to film in between those dates.

The suspended filming may delay the release of the series by a month. We’re still expecting the show to arrive in 2023.

The Crown season 6 plot

What could the final season bring us? Morgan hasn’t been all that cler, but there are a lot of story opportunities. As the fifth season is going to focus on the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, that will take us to the late 1990s. From there, we’re looking at major events of the 2010s.

We will likely see how the 9/11 attacks affected things in Britain, and then the Iraq War. The season will also need to deal with the deaths of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother, and we are expecting to see something about the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the very end of the series.

Morgan has previously said that the story won’t get to Harry and Meghan’s relationship. When it does come to Harry, we could see him going to rehab and joining the British military and secretly heading off to fight in the Iraq War.

The Crown is available to stream on Netflix.
