There are so many highly anticipated Netflix shows still to be released in 2022, such as Firefly Lane season 2, Dead to Me season 3, Wednesday, and others. But one of the biggest by far is the Emmy Award-winning historical drama The Crown. Fans have been waiting for The Crown season 5 for quite some time.
The successful Netflix series last released a new season in November 2020. In The Crown season 4, the series tackles the tumultuous time period between 1979 and 1990. Season 4 was the first to feature Emma Corrin as the late Princess Diana.
Picking up after the highly decorated fourth season, The Crown season 5 started filming in July 2021. In December 2021, filming was temporarily suspended due to crew members testing positive for COVID-19, but the season is still on track to be released in 2022.
Unfortunately, The Crown season 5 won’t be coming to Netflix in September 2022. The series wasn’t included on the complete list of new release shows and movies coming to the streamer this month, but we already know when the season will premiere later this year.
The Crown season 5 release updates
Netflix confirmed in September 2021 that The Crown season 5 will be released in November 2022. As of Sept. 8, 2022, the streamer hasn’t specified which date in November the season will drop, but there are plenty of Wednesdays and Fridays open for this high-profile release.
November could look to be a busy month for returning Netflix shows, with Firefly Lane season 2 and others rumored to be released ahead of the holidays. So far, Blockbuster and Manifest season 4 part 1 are confirmed for releases on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 respectively.
Ahead of the release of The Crown season 5 in November 2022, The Crown season 6 — the final season of the series — began filming in September 2022 and is expected to last through at least April 2023. The final episodes will again be on track for a late-year released in 2023.
On Sept. 8, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. Peter Morgan, the creator of The Crown, revealed to Deadline that he expects production on the upcoming season to stop for a period of time “out of respect” for the Queen, who is the subject of the Netflix series.
The final season had recently cast its Prince William and Kate Middleton, hinting at the direction the season would take. It remains to be seen how the producers will incorporate the Queen’s death into the final season, but they will surely tell that story respectfully should they do so.
