Here’s the full scoop on the final episodes

After more than two years of waiting, Jen and Judy are almost back for a third and final go-round in the acclaimed Netflix dark comedy series Dead to Me. The last batch of episodes arrives in one week, and we cannot wait to see how this story ends for our favorite duo.

Premiering back in May 2019, it has been a long road for the show despite only consisting of three seasons. The pandemic led to a significant hold-up between seasons 2 and 3, and then star Christina Applegate went public with her multiple sclerosis diagnosis during the filming of season 3.

Filming was paused for a while for Applegate’s sake as she adjusted to life with MS. She has spoken publicly about how she now regularly uses a walking cane. However, Applegate was determined to see the show through and finish strong, so she eventually returned to complete the project.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the new season, we’re addressing them below! Here’s everything you need to know about Dead to Me season 3.

Dead to Me season 2 ending explained

Warning: Spoilers ahead from Dead to Me season 2

The end of Dead to Me season 2 was pretty intense, and given that it aired over two years ago, it’s understandable that many fans need a refresher on what happened.

In season 2, Jen hid a big secret, putting her in a similar position to Judy in season 1. Jen killed Steve, and while Judy believed she did it in self-defense, we learn that Steve did not physically attack Jen. Jen acted impulsively when she killed him because he had threatened (verbally) her and her family.

Tired of being weighed down by guilt and not wanting to put her family in further danger, Jen leaves several letters in an “emergency” kit for her kids and Judy. She intends to leave them in Judy’s care as she prepares to turn herself in to the police. Jen goes to Detective Perez and tells her what happened. She takes Perez into the woods, where she and Judy previously buried Steve’s body, but can’t find his grave.

Surprisingly, Perez is pretty understanding about the whole thing. She lets Jen get away with it and tells her they never need to talk about what they didn’t find in the woods again.

When Jen returns home, Judy and her kids are shocked to see her there since they are under the impression she wouldn’t return. Charlie had already read the note Jen left for him, so it’ll be interesting to see his reaction in the new season.

Later, Perez brings Judy the painting she was looking for, and we find out it’s stuffed with cash, likely from when Steve was working for the Greek mafia.

It seems like the show is going to get a happy ending. Jen and Judy use the money to pay off Lorna, so they don’t have her breathing down their necks anymore, and they even buy Charlie a new car. But while driving it home, they get hit by an intoxicated Ben, who has just learned that his brother is dead.

Dead to Me season 3 cast

It would feel strange to go into the third and final season of Dead to Me without Jen or Judy, so we’re thankful that both leading ladies will return for the last ten episodes. It’s a credit to Christina Applegate’s strength and resilience that she rallied to do the third season. She credits the support of her co-star Linda Cardellini and the crew for helping her get there.

Apart from Applegate and Cardellini, James Marsden will also be back, although it’s not clear what how big of a role he’ll play, given how the second season ended. We’ll also see more of Jen’s kids in season 3.

Below we’ve listed all of the cast members confirmed to return:

  • Christina Applegate as Jen Harding
  • Linda Cardellini as Judy Hale
  • James Marsden as Ben Wood
  • Sam McCarthy as Charlie Harding
  • Luke Roessler as Henry Harding
  • Max Jenkins as Christopher Doyle
  • Diana-Maria Riva as Detective Ana Perez
  • Brandon Scott as Detective Nick Prager
  • Valerie Mahaffey as Lorna Harding
  • Natalie Morales as Michelle
  • Marc Evan Jackson as Jeff

As for new cast members, we know that Garret Dillahunt has joined the show for the third season as a talented FBI agent named Glenn Moranis. Moranis intends to get to the bottom of Steve’s murder, which could spell trouble for Jen and Judy. Dillahunt’s arrival on the show is also exciting because it reunites him with Cardellini after the two starred together on ER.

Will there be a Dead to Me season 4?

Unfortunately, there will not be a fourth season of Dead to Me. It was previously announced that the third season would be the last. It seems like creator Liz Feldman was only planning on three seasons, and it sounds like that was the best decision for everyone involved. But we’re thankful the series is going out on good terms, so at least we’ll get an actual ending!
