Community movie finally happening in 2023 (but not at Netflix)

As it turns out, “six seasons and a movie” wasn’t just a throwaway joke from the early days of Community — it was a prophecy. The long talked about Community movie will finally come to fruition in 2023 after many, many years of campaigning from fans.

Since the underrated (in more ways than one) comedy series was canceled by NBC in 2014, and aired its sixth and final season on Yahoo! the following year, fans have been clamoring for the Community movie to solidify the legacy of the series.

In recent years, the possibility of a movie seemed to have become a matter of “when” rather than a matter of “if” it would happen. Most recently, in August 2022, creator Dan Harmon provided the most promising update yet, saying the movie “will happen.”

On Sept. 30, 2022, the news that Community fans have been waiting years for finally broke: Community the Movie is officially coming in 2023 with most of the original cast on board. But since the series currently calls Netflix one of its streaming homes, where will the movie premiere?

Community movie coming to Peacock

While you will be able to binge-watch Community on Netflix for at least a little while longer, Community the Movie will stream exclusively on Peacock, and it’s currently planned for a release sometime in 2023. Peacock makes sense since the series first aired on NBC.

Deadline states Peacock won the rights to the movie in a “competitive situation,” which seems to insinuate other streaming services might have thrown their hat in the ring. However, Peacock came out on top, and it’s no secret that the movie will be a huge draw for the newbie streamer.

As for who fans will see back for more mayhem in the movie, the cast so far includes Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong reprising their roles. Additional original cast members Donald Glover, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Chevy Chase are not currently on board.

Will Community leave Netflix?

Unfortunately, Community will be leaving Netflix. Along with the announcement of the forthcoming movie, Peacock will also have a non-exclusive streaming deal for all six seasons of the series. A date for its drop on Peacock hasn’t been announced.

For now, the 110 episodes of the series are available to stream on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. Expect Community to leave these platforms ahead of the movie’s release sometime in 2023.
