3 Netflix shows that definitely won’t be back in 2023

Are you as excited as us for all the Netflix shows confirmed or expected to come out in 2023? We can’t wait for the return of shows like YouOuter BanksThe Witcher and Shadow and Bone. However, there are some Netflix shows we know for sure won’t be coming back next year, and it’s some of the streamer’s biggest series. Read on to find out which Netflix shows won’t be returning next year.

Look, we don’t want you to start panicking. The Netflix shows we’re going to list will definitely be returning, just not as soon as next year. Although it sucks that some shows won’t be coming back in 2023, I guess you could say these shows were expected not to return. Why? Well, it’s very likely that they won’t be finished with the filmmaking process to make a 2023 release.

Now, get ready because here are three Netflix shows that definitely won’t be back in 2023!

Netflix shows that won’t be back in 2023

Of course, we had to start with the best show on Netflix, Stranger Things.

Stranger Things season 5

With the release of Stranger Things season 4, the sci-fi show became the most expensive Netflix original series. It was reported that each episode of the fourth season cost the streamer $30 million. Since the budget went up significantly for the fourth season, we’re expecting the fifth and final season to be just as expensive or more. We’re also expecting a high production value for Stranger Things season 5, like the fourth season.

But unfortunately, we won’t see the Stranger Things kids back on our screens as soon as next year because the cast and crew will be hard at work filming the final season. Once production wraps, we’ll most likely be looking at a lengthy post-production process which would take place throughout the rest of 2023. So, our best release prediction for now would be sometime in 2024.

According to a GQ interview with David Harbour, he said that the Duffer Brothers will finish writing the scripts for the fifth season in 2022. He also said that he thinks production on Stranger Things season 5 will start in 2023 and that it will probably be released “mid-2024.” However, this hasn’t been confirmed by Netflix or the Duffer Brothers, so we’ll have to take it with a grain of salt. Still, Harbour’s release prediction seems very possible at the moment.

The Umbrella Academy season 4

The Umbrella Academy was officially renewed for a fourth and final season on Aug. 25, but we haven’t had any new updates on the upcoming season since then. However, we’re almost certain that The Umbrella Academy season 4 won’t be coming out in 2023 based on previous seasons’ production and post-production schedules.

We’re most likely looking at about five to six months of production and about seven to ten months of post-production before the fourth season lands on Netflix. In order to possibly make a 2023 release, production would have to start by the end of 2022 and post-production could only take seven or fewer months. However, production will likely get started sometime next year. And if this is the case, the filmmaking process just wouldn’t finish up in time to make a 2023 release. So we’re more than likely looking at a 2024 release. Once Netflix announces the official release date, you can count on us to share it right away.

Squid Game season 2

Everyone’s waiting on Squid Game season 2 to come to Netflix! According to an interview creator Hwang Dong-hyuk did with The Hollywood Reporter back in August, he plans on finishing the scripts for the second season by the end of 2022 or early 2023. He also mentioned in an earlier interview with IndieWire that Squid Game season 2 could arrive in late 2023 or early 2024.

Obviously, we would like to see the second season sooner rather than later, so a late 2023 release is what we’re hoping for. But a 2024 release looks more likely. Of course, it all depends on when production starts on season 2.

Principal photography will probably start early next year and take about four to five months. After that, the post-production process will be what takes the longest. It took 10 months of post-production before the first season landed on Netflix. If it takes 10 months of post-production for the second season, we won’t be seeing it until 2024. It’s important to remember that Hwang Dong-hyuk is also working on other projects, so this could be why we don’t see the second season until 2024. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
